What does Kind Cocoon mean? The Kind Cocoon is a place where you can find comfort in the discomfort. Fun Fact: Caterpillars completely dissolve in their cocoon, digesting themselves. This is a sticky gooey phase. Seems incredibly uncomfortable right? This is very much like our own process in life. We may not literally dissolve, however, I’m sure many of us can relate to this feeling of dissolving, of digesting our lives and having to let go of what is no longer serving us. The Kind Cocoon represents the safety to go through this process, to be held in warmth and love.

What is Reiki?Reiki is an energetic practice that uses the universal life force energy for healing. Reiki is a spiritual and energetic healing, however it is not religious or tied to any religion. Reiki is both a hands on and hands off practice that has been proven to lower stress levels and blood pressure. Reiki can be done for anything living. There are different sacred symbols taught to Reiki Practitioners. There is a symbol for initially channeling reiki and for cleansing. A symbol for distance healing. A symbol for emotional healing. A symbol for returning things back to the right function, and more. I often use these symbols for my food, my plants, my clients, and more. These symbols are used kind of in the way like turning the knob on the radio to tune into a certain channel.

How does Reiki work? Now this is where it gets tricky. There are many metaphors as to how and why Reiki works that explains it quite wonderfully (in my opinion). However, there is little scientific explanation for how Reiki works. Which is why there are so many skeptics to this healing modality. The best way I have been able to explain how Reiki works is through electricity. Electricity works through a magnetic field. Electricity needs a conduit (example: potato). A potato has the potential to conduct electricity because it is a source filled with electrolytes. These electrolytes act as an electrical conductor which means they allow the flow of electric charges, thus it will conduct electricity. Electricity also doesn’t travel through the actual wires from the conduit to the output, it actually travels through magnetic fields around the wires. I believe Reiki works in an extremely similar way. The Reiki Practitioner is the conduit and the healing energy travels through the magnetic fields in the air to the client. It very much boils down to intention.

What is an in-person Reiki Session like?An in-person Reiki session often consists of a client laying on a massage table for the duration of an hour or longer. If laying straight on their back, stomach, or side is unavailable due to injuries or illness, the client is able to sit in a chair. Other adjustments can be explored as well. Props such as leg/knee pillows, head pillows, a weighted blanket, blankets, and calm stickers are provided to choose from. Clients are encouraged to bring comfort items with them such as comfy clothes, a stuffed animal, favorite crystals, etc. Upon arrival for the first appointment, the client will fill out a series of forms such as a disclosure, liability, and intake form. After filling out the forms, I will leave the room so the client can get comfortable on the massage table or in the chair. *Clothes must remain on, this is not a massage. After a few minutes I will re enter the room and check on the client’s needs and make sure they are as comfortable as possible. I will then begin the session by playing a crystal sound bowl and wind chimes, to help the client ground into the present moment. I will end the session in the same way with the crystal sound bowl and chimes. A standard session is an hour long, however I will check in with you at the beginning of the session to see how tight your schedule is and ask for permission to extend the session if I feel necessary. This will not exceed 1.5 hours unless previously discussed. During the session I will either hover my hands above you or place them on appropriate areas of your body, or both. This will be discussed before we begin in more depth, to make sure you are comfortable. It is thought that Reiki has its own wisdom, and knows where to go in the body. The Reiki practitioner is not the one doing the healing, rather they are facilitating the space and energy while the client's body does the healing. After a session clients have reported seeing more clearly, having more saturated colors in their vision, having their pain levels decrease from an 8 to a 2, pain completely going away, psychedelic like visuals, relief of grief and more. Each session's outcome will be different and cannot be predicted, since the Reiki energy goes to where it is needed, not where it is expected. It is normal during a session for clients to fall asleep, snore, fart, cry/sob, make sounds (ie; grunting, growls, screams, etc.) This is all welcome and a safe place to let things go.

What is the history of Reiki? The history of Reiki has been difficult to research due to the fact that when World War II ended, the Japanese were required to unconditionally surrender to the U.S. In turn laws were enacted that banned all Eastern healing methods and required that only licensed Western Medical methods be practiced. Some Japanese healing groups such as acupuncturists were able to continue their practice through creating a government licensing system, the members of the Reiki Group Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai decided they did want to go through the process of licensure and instead went underground. Because of this, Reiki became extremely secret and was known by few. William Lee Rand realized that there was little factual history of Reiki, so he embarked on a journey of uncovering the truth. He was able to trace Reiki back to 1914 to Matiji Kawakami, a Japanese therapist, who created a healing style he called Reiki Ryoho and in 1919, he published a book titled Reiki Ryoho to Sono Koka, or Reiki Healing and Its Effects. Before this it was often accepted that Mikao Usui was the founder of Reiki. In March of 1922, Mikao Usui Sensei had his mystical experience on Kurama yama in which he was given the Reiki energy and from this developed his style of Reiki, which he called Usui Reiki Ryoho. It is interesting that Usui Sensei chose this name as it tends to indicate that he knew of the other styles of Reiki Ryoho in use and was indicating that this was his style of Reiki Ryoho. Before his passing, Usui Sensei had asked his student Chujiro Hayashi Sensei to open his own Reiki clinic and to expand and develop Reiki Ryoho based on his previous experience as a medical doctor in the Navy. He made quite a few valuable changes to the way Reiki was facilitated and taught. Hayashi Sensei went on to teach Takata Sensei. One thing that is important to understand is that if it were not for Takata Sensei, Reiki would most likely have fallen into obscurity and never have been practiced by people all over the world; even in Japan it would have been mostly unknown. Reiki energy comes from an infinite source and because of this, regardless of how developed and evolved ones healing energy has become, one will always be channeling only a small portion of the potential healing energy that is available; it is always possible for the quality, effectiveness and benefit of one’s healing energies to improve and this includes what takes place in the Attunements, Placements and Ignitions. Can Reiki be harmful or cause any contraindications?Reiki is not harmful. Reiki has been said to help increase the effectiveness of medication. If you take any medication, it is important to be aware of the overdose symptoms and let your doctor know if you begin to experience any after a Reiki session.

What is Distance Reiki and how does it work?Distance Reiki is similar but different to an in person session. Before a distance session, I send a written guide on how to make your space as relaxing as possible. I also have the client send me a picture of the space they will be having their session in. That way I can really visualize their space and cleanse it. I also have the client send me a picture of them for visualization as well. Ten minutes before the session, I call the client to check in with them and let them know that the session will begin soon so they can get as comfortable as possible. From there, we will hang up and I will begin facilitating the session in my Reiki room. I picture the person laying on my Reiki table and facilitate the session as if the person is truly there. At the end of the session I will call the client so they know the session has ended and give them time to verbally process. Distance Reiki can be done for anyone around the world. Before my training in Reiki 2, I thought distance healing was nonsense. I facilitated Distance Reiki for the first time as homework for my training, and I was astounded by the results. One of my clients, across the country, told me the following day how they hadn’t slept that well since they were 12 years old. Almost a decade! I often hear back after a distance Reiki session that the clients felt very relaxed and continued to feel these effects days after the session. I have also been told that they felt tingling during the session and other hot/cold sensations, same as they might have during an in person session. Distance Reiki works through the thought that everything and everyone is connected. There is no true barrier. If you are interested in a Distance Reiki session, or just want to inquire further, feel free to email kindcocoonwellness@gmail.com or call/text (970) 393-2746.
